Other Herbs:
Rosemary is being studied for help with memory.
Don't forget to use a stem to brush sauce on the barbecue meal. Before
taking the chicken, fish or lamb off the fire, toss the stem on the coals
to add a burst of flavor.
Remember...Rosemary tea supposedly helps digest fat and relieves aching
joints. The tea is also an antiseptic gargle.
I often get asked what the difference in taste is among Rosemary.
My nose can't tell. Rosemary is too strong for me to nibble straight
so your guess is as good as mine. I use uprights for cooking and
prostrates for over walls and pots.
Rosemary Uses and Gardening Tips:
General Information
Rosemary is the classic herb in its growth requirements. It needs sun, well draining soil and very little fertilizer. It will succumb to wet feet. When the temperature dips below 20 degrees and there is a wind you could lose even an established bush. So, select your site carefully. Remember that if you have rosemary in a pot, it's roots are more exposed. You might need to bring it into a sheltered place if you are experiencing unusually cold weather for your area. Don't do what I did last winter, sometimes apparently I haven't upgraded my memory frequently enough. We were experiencing teens with a sharp wind that when on for days. I had many pots of different varieties on the deck. Being blessed with usually mild weather I had left them outside the greenhouse, who has enough room in there for a plant as hardy as Rosemary. As the second day of teens went on I figured I needed to bring the Rosemary in. Did I take it to the cool greenhouse? No, I brought it into my nearly 70 degree family room that has floor to ceiling glass. I was going to make sure they had enough light. What was I thinking? Well going from 18 degrees to 70 shocked them to death. Apparently I wasn't thinking.
Growing Rosemary Indoors
Need I say more? Some people do have luck with it. Even when it has been acclimated to indoor conditions this far north in Seattle it doesn't get enough sun to do more then endure until the first moment of Spring.
Culinary Uses
Great in herb butter and of course for lamb. You can eat the flower too, lovely in a salad. Don't ever throw away rosemary branches. Use them for skews our even under the meat on a barbecue. If you have a lot of old rosemary that you've pruned put them on your wood pile and throw them on a winter's fire.
Landscaping Uses
Go wild with your pruners on the upright form. They will take to being shaped in whimsical forms. Use the prostrate for pots and rock gardens.
