Other Herbs:
All mints should be grown in containers unless you want them to travel
around your garden making friends. All mints need moisture, sun and fertilizer to look their best.
The exception is Corsican Mint, place this one in the shade.
Mint Uses and Gardening Tips:
General Information
You would think this much feared aggressive species would require no additional explanation except BEWARE. Not true. There are several very shy mints and right now I wish I had taken better care of some of my propagation stock. All of the mints above, with the exception of Corsican Mint, should receive at least a half day of sun. Without this you are likely to develop rust, that yucky orange disease that discolors the mints. If you encounter rust cut off all the orange plant parts and provide your mint with better sun and water. In fact moving them will get them away from the rust spores and don't add any diseased plants to your compost pile. Mints should never be allowed to dry out. They should be given just a pinch more fertilizer then most other herbs, but not nearly as much as a bedding plant. Corsican mint is the except. It can live almost in completely shade and does best in dappled light. It's full height is a dainty 1 inch. If you have stepping stones or a rock wall that are mostly shaded, this is the dear little mint for you. It has charming little pink flowers in the middle of the summer but unless you are eye to eye with them you will never know they have appeared.
Growing Mint Indoors
Corsican with it's low light requirement does do pretty well. Don't try the others.
Culinary Uses
Tea is first on the list. If peppermint tea doesn't make your stomach feel better consider going to the doctor. It is better than anything over the counter. Don't forget fresh iced tea in the summer. Here is where you can experiment with all the different varieties. Mint adds a fresh note to new potatoes as well as fruit salads. There of course is the standard mint sauce for lamb.
Landscaping Uses
While I can extol the virtues of Corsican mint tucked away in shady places (it suffers and dies back in the winter if it is too wet) I can't think of anything to do with the more traditional mints. They look all right cascading from pots kept close at hand for use.
