Other Herbs:
This hardy perennial herb is hardy to -40 degrees. Once you have
it established in your garden your baked potatoes are set for life.
Chives do like sun but it doesn't need a full days worth. Chives
will do better fertilized in rich soil contrary to most other herbs.
Chives Uses and Gardening Tips:
Chives Problems
The only mistake some people make is cutting chives as if they are giving them a haircut. When you use chives cut from near the base and they will immediately start regenerating. If you just trim the tops it weakens the plant.
Growing Chives Indoors
If you want some close at hand it does better than most herbs indoors in a pot. Divide some from your garden when there is a chill in the air, pot them up and put them on your kitchen windowsill. They will die back in the winter outside, but they will reappear even stronger next spring.
Culinary Uses
To me a potato without chives is just plain naked. Chives are rich in iron and vitamins. Throw the flowers in a salad.
Landscaping Uses
Chives in bloom are a very pretty sight. The make perky edging plants and are ideally suited for adding height to your terra cotta pots. The garlic chives I offer bloom white, while regular chives have a pinkish purple bloom. Chives planted under fruit trees are said to deter aphids. Chives under roses make the rose smell stronger.
