Other Herbs:
Certain cats will be in ecstasy, virtually sitting in the plant. While other
more sophisticated cats will be quite blasé. If you are the creative type, dry some
catnip (not in direct sun as the leaves will loose their potency), sew them into your
cat's personal toy. They might appreciate the effort, then again...
People have long used catnip tea medicinally for colds and headaches as it contains
vitamin C. It is also calming for people.
Pregnant women should not drink it.
Catnip Uses and Gardening Tips:
Catnip is not fussy, if it was it won't survive long. Your standard sun to
part sun and half decent soil will do just fine. If you are growing it for your cat,
put a crown of chicken wire over the plant close to the ground. As the catnip grows through
the wire and gets eaten the roots will remain intact growing new catnip. Make sure
the edges of the wire are tucked in securely. It is very hardy, good to -40 so if the
roots remain you will see it year after year.
Growing Catnip Indoors
Not recommended as it will get leggy.
Culinary Uses
The tea made from leaves and flowers is very high in C and very calming, more so then Chamomile, but not as tasty!
Landscaping Uses
Catnip in bloom in a terra cotta pot is lovely. You can use the chicken wire concept in pots as well.
